Disaster Recovery Testing Checklist
Use this checklist to make DR testing more credible and more useful than a compliance checkbox exercise.
Recovery objectives
Are RTO and RPO targets defined per critical service, not just per platform?
Dependency coverage
Does the exercise include identity, DNS, networking, data, and application dependencies?
Runbook quality
Are runbooks role-specific, current, and explicit about first actions, escalation, and rollback?
Communications plan
Do business, technical, and leadership stakeholders know how status, decisions, and timelines will be handled?
Remediation follow-through
Will findings become assigned work with owners, deadlines, and validation criteria?
When testing reveals too many unknowns, a recovery readiness review often prevents teams from overestimating how well they can recover.
